The Toronto Korean Mental Health Service; Learning from the Process of it's Establishment


Abstract
Immigration is known as a stressful process to adjust in a different culture.
There are a lot of factors affecting on this process and it is included ability of adaptation to new world, rapid change of socio-cultural background, reversible role of family members and changes of socioeconomic status etc.
However, most records revealed very poor availability to use mental health centers for various ethinic groups in North America.
It is particularly predominant phenomena among immigrants from Southeast Asia.
This study is an investigation of developmental processes of Koren Mental Health Centre in Toronto, Canada and the role and structure of mental health organization for minority in man stream society.

@EN 1. The formation of Koean mental health Centre was forced and promoted by vigorous communications and concerns about mental health issues between professionals and workers of social service field in both mainstream and Korean society.
2. The active involvement and advice of representative research centre for mental health from mainstream society (ex, Clarke Institute of Psychiatry) back up establishment of a new mental health model fittable to Korean society with positive
way.
3. The most appropriate model dealing with mental health for Korean immigrants should be deeply considered to its racial and cultural background.
4. One of most important factors act on the function of mental health centre for minority group in immigration society was role of a cultural broker who has responsibility to link and coordinate socio-cultural gaps between mainstream and
minority
society.
